How do you decide if you should upgrade to Windows 10 or not? Below is how I would answer that question. This is my opinion and the answer can vary from situation to situation.
Regardless of what version of Windows you have now something can always go wrong with an upgrade. It is a big deal to change your operating system and a lot of stuff has to go just right for it to be a success. No guarantees that all applications and hardware is compatible. For example: there may not be software available to make your printer work with Windows 10. Or you might have to install a newer version of your anti-virus software
REALLY IMPORTANT: If you are currently experiencing problems or if your computer is eat up with viruses and unwanted programs then you should not upgrade until all issues have been resolved. I would not attempt the upgrade unless your computer is clean and problem free.
Don't want to pay for Microsoft Office (ie...Word and Excel), try downloading OpenOffice. OpenOffice is an opensource type program and is free. It's a legit fully functional program without any ad-ware.
This app lets you synchronize your pictures and files to an external hard drive or flash drive. It's simple and very effective. I have been using it for years to back up all my family pictures. It is a Microsoft product and free.
I love this app. When you save a file to your Dropbox folder on your PC it synches your files to the internet and to other computers that you have Dropbox installed on. Another cool feature is when installed on your cell phone you can setup to automatically save your camera pics to the Dropbox folder, which syncs to your computers. This special link gets you and I an additional 500mb free. You will have 2.5gb free space. Click on the box below or click here to sign up.
The free version of this is great for helping remove unwanted programs and adware. Make sure you don't enable the trial of the premium version if you don't want to be nagged to purchase.
There are just too many choices. And who is to say a free antivirus wouldn't work just as good as a paid for version. My opinion is that all anti-virus software products are hit n' miss when it comes to detecting and removing a virus. However, I do think you should install an antivirus from a reputable vendor. After all It's your first line of defense. If your internet service provider includes an anti-virus software at no charge the decision maybe easy. Sandhill Telephone Cooperative offers Trend Micro Internet Security at not charge. And Time Warner Cable offers McAfee at no charge. Most important, make sure you install something.
Who truly knows which is best? But here are my picks based on experience:
Paid for versions: Trend Micro, Norton Anti-virus (I don't think the Norton 360 version is necessary)
Free versions: Avast, Microsoft Security Essentials, AVG
Note: Microsoft Security Essentials is called Windows Defender in Windows 8. It is also built-in.
You thought you were protected because you installed an antivirus software but still got infected with a virus and/or unwanted programs. There are a few reasons for this issue.
